Ask anyone how dog years work and you’ll get the same answer: multiply by seven. It’s tidy, it’s memorable — and it’s wrong. By the times-7 rule, a one-year-old dog would be a seven-year-old child. In reality, a one-year-old dog can reproduce, has adult teeth, and has finished most of their growth. That’s not a second-grader; that’s a teenager.
Where the times-7 myth came from
The rule seems to trace back to simple lifespan math from the mid-1900s: humans lived to about 70, dogs to about 10, so one dog year “equals” seven human years. It was a marketing-friendly shortcut, not science — and vets have been politely correcting it ever since.
How aging actually works in dogs
Dogs age fast early, then settle down. The first year takes a puppy from newborn to young adult — roughly 15 human years of development. The second year adds about 9 more, so a two-year-old dog is like a 24-year-old person. After that, each dog year equals somewhere between 4 and 7 human years, depending on size:

Why do big dogs age faster?

Within dogs, it reverses: researchers believe the accelerated growth that turns a puppy into a 150 lb dog in two years comes with faster cellular aging and higher cancer risk. The DNA clock version
In 2020, researchers at UC San Diego studied DNA methylation (chemical aging markers) in Labradors and produced a formula: human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31. It made headlines because it maps cellular aging — and because it says a 1-year-old dog is a 31-year-old human, which surprises everyone.
