Puppy feeding math

A 15 lb, 4-month-old puppy: RER ≈ 293 kcal × 2 = about 590 kcal per day — a cup and a half of 400 kcal/cup puppy food, split across three meals. Recalculate every couple of weeks: the "right" amount changes constantly as they grow.

Frequently asked questions
How much should I feed my puppy?+
Puppies need roughly 2–3 times the calories per pound of an adult dog: about 3 × RER before 4 months and 2 × RER from 4 months to adulthood. This calculator does that math from your puppy’s current weight and age, then converts to cups of your specific food.
How many times a day should a puppy eat?+
Four meals a day until 12 weeks, three meals from 3–6 months, and two meals from 6 months onward. Small breeds especially need frequent meals early — their little bodies can run low on blood sugar between feeds.
When do I switch from puppy food to adult food?+
When they reach about 80–90% of expected adult size: around 10–12 months for small breeds, 12–15 for medium, and 15–24 months for large and giant breeds (who should stay on large-breed puppy formula that long for joint health).
Should large-breed puppies eat special food?+
Yes — large-breed puppy formulas control calcium and energy density so pups grow at a safe rate. Too-fast growth in big breeds is linked to hip and elbow problems. It matters more than brand choice.
My puppy inhales food in seconds — is that a problem?+
Speed-eating can cause hiccups, vomiting and (in deep-chested breeds) raises bloat concerns. A slow-feeder bowl or scattering kibble on a flat tray fixes it cheaply — and doubles as entertainment.
