The formula

year 1 = 15 human years · year 2 = +9 (24 total)
every year after = +4 human years

Cats compress an entire childhood and adolescence into twelve months — which is why a six-month-old kitten behaves more like a ten-year-old child than a toddler — and then age at a strikingly consistent four human years per calendar year. More detail inwhat are cat years.

Don't know your cat's age?

For kittens, weight is the quickest guide — roughly a pound per month up to six months. Thekitten age calculator estimates it from weight and milestones, and the cat dental chart shows how vets narrow an adult cat's age from tooth wear and tartar.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate cat years?+

A cat’s first year equals about 15 human years, the second adds 9 (so a 2-year-old cat is 24), and every year after adds 4. So a 10-year-old cat is 56 and a 15-year-old is 76.

Do all cat breeds age at the same rate?+

Essentially yes. Unlike dogs, where size dramatically changes the aging rate, cats age at a near-uniform rate across breeds. Maine Coons take longer to finish growing (up to 3–4 years) but age at the same pace thereafter.

When is a cat a senior?+

Vets consider cats senior from about 11 years — 60 in human terms — and geriatric from 15. From 11, twice-yearly checkups with kidney and thyroid bloodwork are the standard recommendation.

How long do cats live?+

Indoor cats typically live 12–18 years and often reach 20. Outdoor cats average considerably less due to traffic, predators and disease. Lifestyle is the single biggest factor an owner controls.
