The formula behind the chart

year 1 = 15 human years · year 2 = +9 (24 total)
each year after: small +4 · medium +5 · large +6 · giant +7

Dogs cram an enormous amount of development into their first two years, then settle into a size-dependent rate. Large dogs genuinely age faster at a cellular level — researchers estimate roughly a month of life expectancy lost per 4.4 lb of adult body weight. The full explanation, including the 2020 DNA-methylation research, is inhow dog years actually work.

Using the chart well

The practical value is in the senior threshold. Once your dog crosses it, twice-yearly checkups with bloodwork catch the manageable conditions early, and weight control matters more than it ever did — metabolism slows before appetite does. Portion accordingly with thedog food calculator, and seewhen a dog is considered a senior for what changes.

Frequently asked questions

Is the dog age chart different for different breeds?+

It differs by size, not breed specifically. After age two, small dogs age about 4 human years annually, medium 5, large 6 and giant breeds 7. That is why a 10-year-old Chihuahua is middle-aged while a 10-year-old Great Dane is elderly.

Why is one dog year not seven human years?+

The times-7 rule was lifespan arithmetic from the mid-1900s, not science. It badly misrepresents puppies — a one-year-old dog is sexually mature with adult teeth, which is a teenager, not a seven-year-old child.

At what age is a dog a senior?+

By size: small breeds around 11, medium 10, large 8, and giant breeds 6–7. Senior status is when vets recommend moving from annual to twice-yearly checkups with bloodwork.

How long do dogs live?+

Small breeds typically 12–16 years, medium 10–14, large 9–12 and giant breeds 7–10. Weight management, dental care and regular vet visits have a measurable effect within those ranges.
