The maths behind it: 15 human years for the first year, 9 more for the second, then 4 for every year after. The reasoning is explained in what are cat years.

Don’t know your cat’s exact age?

Very common with rescues and strays. A few reasonable clues:

  • Teeth. Kittens have all their adult teeth by 6–7 months. Slight yellowing suggests 1–2 years; tartar on most teeth 3–5; noticeable wear and missing teeth 10+.
  • Coat. Young cats have soft, fine fur. Older cats develop coarser coats, sometimes with grey patches around the muzzle.
  • Eyes. Young cats’ irises look smooth and clear; from about 12, many cats develop a slight cloudiness or lacy appearance to the iris.
  • Activity. Not reliable on its own — plenty of 12-year-olds still tear around at 6am.

For kittens specifically, weight is the best single indicator: roughly one pound per month up to six months. The kitten age calculator turns weight and milestones into an age estimate.

What each stage means practically

Prime (3–6): the easy years. Keep weight in check — indoor cats gain quietly, and obesity is the biggest preventable health problem in cats. Portion properly with the cat food calculator.

Mature (7–10): annual vet visits with bloodwork become genuinely valuable. Watch for subtle weight loss, which is often the first sign of thyroid or kidney issues.

Senior (11–14): twice-yearly checkups. Consider raised food bowls, softer bedding, and a litter box with a lower entry — arthritis in cats is common and under-diagnosed because they hide it so well.

Geriatric (15+): comfort first. Many cats live happily here for years with managed conditions. Sudden changes in drinking, appetite or litter habits always warrant a call.
